Gay beaches in Vienna
Summer in the city … it’s hot and you want to cool off? How about going to a gay beach in Vienna? We’ve got some of them. They are pretty easy to reach with public transport and in summer the places are relatively crowded with locals.
We’ve already told you about Schönbrunnerbad. In the 18th century Emporer Franz Joseph I. learned swimming in the first “pool”, replaced by an olympic-size pool in the late 50ies, erarly 80ies. Some years ago, Schönbrunnerbad was closed for renovation and it took pretty a long time, because it’s listed as historic landmark and very strict rules apply for the rebuilding process. But they rally managed well to integrate the unique 50ies building with modern sanitary and wellness facilities, as well as gastronomy areas.
It’s the home of the young and restless, as well as the bold and the beautiful. Especially on the north side next to the big pool, many gays look for their future husband … or the next muscle hottie. Schönbrunnerbad has a nice restaurant with rather healty food and a buffet - with rather unhealthy food. In the wellness center you can book massages, sweat in a sauna or train in a well-equipped fitness studio for an extra fee. Rainbow families might be interested in the family pool. But beware … the prices are really high compared to public swimming facilities.

Can be found on the Danube Island on the New Danube side in the area reserved for nude bathing. It’s a beautiful nature reserve with some endangered species. There are small cool ponds on the islands - even in the midst of the summer heat and some restaurants are around. Getting there takes you rather long, as you have to walk relatively long. This place is very cruisey.

Is one of the oldest public baths in Vienna. A log of gays can be found in the nudist area, equipped with a small buffet, sauna, massages etc. Gänsehäufl is a beautiful island in the Old Danube.

It’s got one of the most beautiful views over a city in the world. The only thing is … it takes you pretty long to get there, at least if you depend on public transport. It’s a lovely fin-de-siécle bath in the hills and vinyards in the north of the city. The pool is really very tiny, but you’ll get the most impressive view over the city as you can directly focus St. Stephen’s and the rest of Vienna. The place is less gay than Schönbrunnerbad, but if you like getting your sun tan, you should pay a visit there at least once.
